to know the ropes
«Знать верёвки». Досконально знать; быть в курсе дела; хорошо ориентироваться; знать все входы и выходы. Во времена парусных кораблей морякам приходилось подробно знакомиться с такелажем (оснастка судов) и с правильной идентификацией и использованием верёвок, канатов, тросов. Отсюда и выражение to show somebody the ropes («показать кому-либо верёвки»), т. е. полностью ввести кого-то в курс дела, сообщить кому-либо все подробности.

This is John. He's been here 30 years. He'll show you the ropes. — Это Джон. Он здесь 30 лет. Он познакомит тебя со всеми деталями.
